Wraparound supports are for students that have behavior support plans in place either in connection with an IEP or in connection with an RtI (response to intervention) program. In either event, the student will have a plan for both behavioral and academic supports in place. Only a small percentage of my students will need these supports.
As in the case of my “Somewhere Else Plan,” I believe in the importance of abiding by and supporting the IEP in every way possible and cooperating with the special education team to ensure the student gets the behavioral supports he needs. Thus, my “strategies” for wraparound support will be those set forth in the IEP by the students’ special education team. In the case of a student who does not have an IEP, but who has otherwise been targeted for RtI, I would look to the students’ counselors or other behavioral specialists to determine what wraparound supports have been recommended based on the student’s individual needs. My “strategies” would be to adopt those recommendations and confer with the behavioral team as appropriate, to ensure mutual understanding and consistent application. I truly believe that all students must be treated with respect and given an opportunity to learn. Social justice for students with disabilities or behavioral problems demands that educators cooperate fully with resource specialists to provide those students with every possible opportunity to access the curriculum. |
